The OpenBSD project has just released version 5.9 of its security focused operating system. This is the project’s 40th release.

A quick review of the new features that can be found in OpenBSD 5.9:

  • W^X policy enforced in the i386 kernel address space
  • Xen domU support (you can now run OpenBSD on Amazon Web Services)
  • Better intel GPU support on Bay Trail and Broadwell processors
  • Pledge support for hundred of system binaries
  • Better networking performance (SMP network stack improvements)
  • Initial IEEE 802.11n wireless support
  • New etherip(4) device for tunneling Ethernet frames across IP networks
  • New pair(4) device for creating paired virtual Ethernet interfaces
  • New tap(4) device providing a layer 3 interface with userland tools
  • GPT partitions support
  • New eigrpd routing daemon for the Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol
  • Chacha20-Poly1305 implemented in the IPsec stack for the ESP protocol
